Building an Online Lab Course

Mice representing compulsive and non-compulsive genetic lines.

BIOL F194 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks was developed in 2015 as a large enrollment lab research course. It was designed to maximize the opportunities of online students to gain experience with neurological research experience and animal care and use training. The course incorporates hundreds of hours of video of mouse behavior (hosted in Google Drive), which students use in their observations to effectively crowdsource a highly accurate dataset. Low-stakes quizzing, discussions, interactive video, and video lecturettes from the instructor were all integrated into the design to create a wholesome and robust course to enable student learning. Please see the course landing page as well as a presentation on the course given in November 2017 at OLC Accelerate.
