Captioning for Accessibility: Managing Quality and Scale

Captioning for Accessibility: Managing Quality and Scale

Over the past three years, I have built a captioning budget and workflow in our office that has been implemented into several design workflows, including media production, course reviews, and Quality Matters reviews. Throughout this process, I kept a benchmark review of each captioning vendor and solution in order to determine the most accurate and most cost effective choice. This document contains a comparison of major captioning services. To view the full document with error rates and quality comparisons, visit the Captioning Vendor Accuracy Comparison document.

The reason I have categorized this accomplishment as “innovative” is because this is not a common approach to captioning at universities. Consideration of accuracy and the student experience is often addressed last after institutional, legal, and IT concerns are satisfied. I am glad that I was able to take this accuracy-first approach to captioning efforts.
